Mobile Network Sizing Study: Strategy and Optimization

Tue 17 Mar 2020

Challenge

To maximize the sale price of one of its entities, an international operator aimed to reliably estimate the potential of its current mobile network.
A radio expert from Sofrecom was appointed to review the applied methodology and estimate the sizing and investments required to meet 5-year throughput ambitions.

Methodology

The expert analyzed the client’s existing estimates and challenged both the marketing and technical assumptions, as well as the calculation methods.
Our radio expert then applied a different approach, calculating the number of cells needed to handle traffic while ensuring the defined quality of service level. To achieve this, several scenarios were considered, combining the construction of new sites and the implementation of new technologies to enhance the performance of existing cells—such as frequency refarming, dual-beam, and mMimo.
In addition to the study, our consultant developed a tool to compare the different scenarios in terms of both sizing and CAPEX. This enabled the recommendation of the optimal scenario to achieve the 5-year marketing ambitions.

Result

At the end of the mission, our client benefited from a more precise strategic sizing plan. They now have strong and reliable arguments for sale negotiations. Thanks to the automated tool, they can independently run simulations based on evolving marketing data and current network technical statistics.
Satisfied with the Sofrecom expert’s performance, the client extended the mission to receive further recommendations on key decisions.
